I was assigned to work with T'ai Hicks, Jada Buford, and Ca'Leah Donaldson on a film project based on an ancient civilization of our choice for the class Literature and Composition. We chose ancient Egypt, and based our story on the conflict between Cleopatra, Marc Antony, and Augustus.
How have the innovations and cultural expressions of ancient civilizations shaped the world we live in today, and how can we use this understanding of ancient city design and culture to reflect on current systems of power, privilege and exclusion in our own neighborhoods?
We first started work on creating our story based on historical events. The first part of this was research utilizing the GRAPES (Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economics, Society) to ensure we understood the culture and could base a story off of it. Afterwards, we decided on using Cleopatra and Marc Antony's story. However, to make the story unique, we used the SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse/Rearrange) to adjust parts of the story to make it unique and easy to digest. We eventually decided on utilizing Reverse to show what would happen if the other side had won, and modify to accelerate the pace of events to keep things engaging.
During this stage of the project, we were taught what a plot diagram is. We were instructed to apply our story to a diagram, letting us map out the overall structure that the story would follow.
Over the next few days, we started work towards a final, solid interpretation of the story. We had to write around 5 scenes, incorporate scamper, and highlight the script displaying examples of compound/complex sentences and direct versus indirect characterization.
We had 3 more days before presenting to film the actual video. Each day, we were required to list the necessary props and costumes to borrow from Ms. Wynn's classroom. We recorded each scene on Ipads lent to us and would rotate who was recording depending on whoever wasn't in the current scene.
Our final movie was edited by Ca'Leah in Capcut. We presented in front of the rest of our class, following a presentation plan provided to us to answer questions and explain intricacies of our project.
