To kick off our entry event, scholars watched a video about bee pollination. Afterwards, they engaged in a pollination lab that simulated bees pollinating from flower to flower. Students also read an article about how robotic bees could spread pollen to plants and postulated why this would be necessary. Finally, they responded to a prompt stating why it is important to bring awareness to bees and why these pollinators are important to our environment.
Scholars worked hard to increase their content knowledge. Areas of focus included marketing research, economics, business planning, marketing/advertising, and some financial literacy. They applied this knowledge to initiate the process of creating their own businesses with an overarching goal to increase awareness about the importance of bees in the East Lake community. This entailed developing their business teams; completing their business pitches; naming their companies; pricing their products, choosing a non-profit organization to donate a portion of their profits; and branding their businesses by creating business logos, and prototypes.
Scholars learned the importance of understanding their target audience through product research. A survey was created to determine target audience product preferences. Take a look how you responded.
Based upon target audience responses, scholars exercised voice and choice by voting for the product they wanted to create. Take a look at the student responses below.
Students formed business teams and worked in groups to create project deliverables. This level of interaction and engagement complemented teaching and learning; and ensured that the product(s) of collaborative activity were enhanced by each student's commitment to work well with others.
Scholars used a template to write their business pitch. Once the pitches were complete, students used an oral presentation rubric to practice. They also practiced giving meaningful feedback to their peers using the "grows and glows" model. How would you evaluate the scholars using this rubric? Watch the final pitch videos and judge for yourself.
