What does it mean to volunteer? Why would Drew require you volunteer for 100 hours during your high school career?
To volunteer is to raise a community up. Coming together as a community and assisting each other in projects that will better our environment, society, and community is an act of positive humanity and an efficient strategy for getting work done. Drew requires us to have 100 community service hours during our high school career in order to create well rounded students, that have an appreciation for our community.
I've volunteered in a multitude of ways throughout my high school years. My favorite volunteer experience was coaching the younger kids in my swim team. I have also done volunteer work for the Kirkwood Urban Forest, city clean up, Birds Georgia, Free Bikes 4 Kids through Hands on Atlanta, and work around my school such as helping build backdrops for our school play.
I was an assistant teacher in a rising first grade classroom. This experience opened up a new interest for me, education. During this program, I assisted with teaching children reading, writing and math skills through project based learning. Throughout this time I demonstrated patience, empathy, and responsibility.
I collected data on the amount of bird deaths caused by building window strikes in downtown Atlanta and my high school. I also labelled the birds and helped put the information into a data system. This helped Birds Georgia come up with solutions for decreasing bird fatality in Atlanta.

On family PBL night I helped teach 4th graders how to identify bird characteristics. Then, they presented an end of year PBL project on how to prevent window collisions.
