Quarter 2 Kindergarten Project

Driving Question: If rocks and soils could talk, what stories would they tell?

With this project, students explored similarities and differences in rocks and soils. They used research skills and lab experiences to sort them into groups based on attributes of each. Students created narratives to communicate a story of rocks and soils. Students documented their stories through the use of art and technology, as well as writing. As a culminating grade level project, students used interviewing and measurement skills to build a tabletop zen garden using the rocks they have collected.

Showcase Presentation Zen Garden

Real world connection: Students drew on their SEL knowledge to learn more about how Zen Gardens can be used to regulate emotions. Students explored how a tabletop zen garden can be a useful way to repurpose the rocks that they collected throughout the project. They became familiar with the construction cart and the engineering design process as they used wood and tools to build a zen garden for our Staff Wellness Room!

In-field experts: Students learned from a geologist and art teacher!
