How have the innovations and cultural expressions of ancient civilizations shaped the world we live in today, and how can we use this understanding of ancient city design and culture to reflect on current systems of power, privilege, and exclusion in our own neighborhoods?
In this project, we researched many different ancient civilizations and their innovations, cultures, and societies. We can see ancient city design and culture in modern problems. Some include the rich having direct authority over the poor or slaves, segregated cities by social class, and exclusive education for the wealthy.
How can we use narrative writing through plot, characterization, and other storytelling techniques to showcase the achievements and cultural legacies of ancient civilizations in ways that help us appreciate and preserve the diverse cultures that shape our world today?
There are many ways we can use narrative writing components to showcase achievements and culture from ancient civilizations that are still important today. One way is through a plot. In your plot, you can convey any impactful story of a culture or convey a message/information relevant to that culture to your audience. Another aspect of storytelling you can use is theme. With the theme, you can use your story to reflect key values of specific societies. These are just a few but there are many more
For this portion of the project, I worked with Owen, Rhyland, Lola, Jonah, and a few others to film a video about the founding of Rome story with a few twists. Key resources included the Roman costumes from Ms.Wynn, the recording iPads, the mics, Amsco world history books, and other small props.
Many connections can be made between ancient Rome and modern civilization. Some include: the use of concrete, complex family structures, and governmental changes. I enjoyed the process of filming and collaborating to make this film, as well as the finished product of this project. After this project, I better understand how to make a narrative with few plot holes, and how to increase and decrease the tension to match the plot diagram. My ancient civilization is Rome, and to improve this project, I would try to tie in the projects made in other classes more into the film. For instance, showing a mandala or the geometry seen inside the film.
