BANDSAW BOXES
BANDSAW BOXES
today, we will learn how to build bandsaw boxes!
on this slide, it shows what we will be doing during this project. we will be learning all about safety.
this slide shows the expectations given while doing this project! it also shows what we should be able to do after.
BANDSAW
do's!
wear safety goggles
cut slowly
clean as you go/ vacuum after use
when pulling material in and out, go very slowly
adjust the blade guard to slightly above the height of the material
don'ts!
leave too much blade exposed
leave the blade running while unattended
use the saw without asking permission from the teacher first
distract or get distracted!
BANDSAW OPERATION
turn the bandsaw on, adjust the blade so there is a good amount visible. then slowly push the object through (watching your fingers!).
when you finish push the object all the way through, cut the machine off. wait till it is completely off then remove the object and clean up!
in this picture we practiced using the bandsaw. each of the members took a turn and cut the pieces to the best of our ability.
in this picture as a class we took turns practicing cutting a large piece of wood independently.
PLANER SAW
do's!
wear ear protection & safety goggles
adjust the cutting thickness to within 1/16" of the material thickness prior to cutting
unplug when finished
attach the vacuum before use
dont's!
put fingers near the opening
pass any material but wood through the planer
pass wood with nails/screws through the planer
PLANER SAW OPERATION
the planer saw is used to make the rough part of the wood smoother. it also makes the wood very neat and clean to give it a somewhat glare. to operate it just adjust the saw to proper height and then slowly guide the wood through and then catch it at the end, so it doesn't fall.
BEFORE..... as you can see from this image this piece of wood is rough, has stray pieces. and is not as smooth as possible...
AFTER...... as you can see from this image this piece of wood is now smooth, no stray pieces, no lumps, and as smooth as possible...
MITER SAW
do's!
wear safety goggles
firmly secure the material with your hand outside of the hand placement line and up against the fence
vacuum after use
unplug the saw (in the classroom) after use
reduce exposure to the blade
dont's!
touch or manually move the blade guard
cut material that required your hand to be inside the hand placement line ( material is too short for this application)
plug in the saw with the cord across the body
measure while material is on the saw
MITER SAW OPERATION
the miter saw is used to cut across the length of wood. this is called a cross cut! it can also be used to cut at angles (like for picture frames)
BANDSAW GLUE UP
in this image the two pieces i cut earlier are now glued together. we all got wood glue and glued the two pieces together.
in this picture we used the miter saw and cut the extra piece of wood off.
SPP DESIGN SKETCH #1
in this SPP design i used my name to display my understanding of the assignment.
SPP DESIGN SKETCH #2
in this SPP i used a word of my choice. i decided to use the word "love". i also decided to use a different vanishing point to show diversity in my work.
SPP DESIGN SKETCH #3
this is my SPP design sketch. by watching a youtube video i learned how to make this 3d word "hedges".
SINGLE LAYER PRACTICE CUT
single layer practice cut
in this image there are two pieces of wood cut. this is a practice cut so i can finish my bandsaw box. we all took turn cutting using the miter saw.
STENCIL SPRAY-PAINT DEMO
BEFORE....in this image i weaved out the sticker using a x-acto knife. i then put the cutout on the carboard to get ready for spray painting.
AFTER....this is the result of my spray painting. i let the spray paint dry and pealed it off. it didn't come out as planned but it is something.
ORBITAL SANDER
do's!
wear safety glasses
keep your sander moving at all times
be careful not to place sander on skin
dont's!
operate the sander without first asking the instructor
touch the sand paper while the sander is operational
put the sander on surfaces that can be damaged by the sander
ORBITAL SANDER OPERATION
the orbital sander is used to make surfaces smooth, by spinning at high speeds. it is mainly used on wood. it smooths out flaws, and get the wood ready for staining. it can also be used to resolve edges that didn't match up perfectly.
BEFORE & AFTER BANDSAW CUT
if i had an image of my work at this step in the process, you would see 4 different pieces of wood, all cut at 3/8in on the ruler. i used the bandsaw to cut the sides and top of my box.
BANDSAW BOX INSIDE CUT
this is a before and after picture of the inside of my bandsaw box. first, i outlined in pencil, then i went with the bandsaw and to make a precise cut out.
BOX GLUE UP
this is a picture from after i glued my pieces together. first, i glued the perimeters using wood glue, then i used clamps to hold them together to dry over night.
3D PRINTER
do's!
make sure your file name is something you can remember
make sure you save it to the SD card
add support if needed
reject before taking the SD card out of the computer
slice image and make size changes if needed
dont's!
when the figure is printing do not touch the heating pad
do not touch the figure while it's being printed because it could possibly mess up the object
don't take the filament out of the 3D printer
don't forget to combine your pieces before export
3D PRITNED KNOB
this is the knob i created through TinkerCAD. TinkerCAD is a 3D printing site that you can use to design your own 3D objects. my knob has a heart as the knob part, and i decided to put my nickname engraved in it.
STAINING
do's!
wear gloves
always stain over a drop cloth
put a small amount of stain on your rag
use a cotton cloth to apply stain
dont's!
mix stains
leave staining materials out. always put them away.
leave stain rags out (leave them in their container)
waste gloves
STAINING/FINISHED PRODUCT
this is a picture after we sanded the wood smooth. then we got an apron and gloves to stain our wood. you could either have a darker stain but i chose to have a light stain.
