My name is Ja'Mya Duckworth, and I’m an African American female golfer determined to break barriers and challenge the social norms of the sport. I began my competitive golf journey at 16, a late start by many standards, but instead of being discouraged, I used it as fuel to excel. In just five months, I transformed my game from struggling with a score of 112 to competing at an 86, and I earned a spot on the "AA Girls All State Team." Perseverance is also a key factor in my health journey. By creating a disciplined regimen, I overcame diabetes in less than 60 days, bringing my A1C from 14 to 6 through exercise, proper nutrition, and consistent monitoring. On top of that, I’ve fought through the challenges of von Willebrand disease (VWD)—a condition that causes easy bruising, internal bleeding, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Despite the limitations others believed I would face, I refused to let VWD define me. Today, perseverance is a central part of my education, golf career, health, and identity.
Future Goals / Accomplished Goals
My future goal is to become a public relations professional for a major company or a celebrity, helping to shape their public image and build strong connections with audiences. I have always been passionate about communication, branding, and media, and I aspire to use my skills to create impactful messaging and representation in the industry. My dream school is Texas A&M, a university known for its strong academic programs and networking opportunities. I am incredibly proud and grateful to have received a full-tuition Posse Scholarship to attend Texas A&M. This opportunity brings me one step closer to turning my dreams into reality, and I am excited for the journey ahead.
