The True Cost of Fast Fashion: From Closet to Crisis

Introduction

For my fast fashion project, I chose a beige outfit with gold jewelry from a thrift store because I enjoyed the earthy colors. I wanted to learn more about the hidden impacts of clothing and how thrifting can be a more sustainable choice.

Research Summary

Fashion Takes Action taught me that clothing can significantly impact both people and the environment. Many garment workers face low wages and unsafe working conditions, while clothing production uses large amounts of water, causes pollution, and creates waste. At the thrift store, I noticed a wide variety of affordable clothing in great condition from different brands. Thrifting gives clothes a second life and helps reduce clothing waste. I still want to research where my specific outfit was originally made, what materials were used, and who made it to better understand its true cost.

Reflection

What surprised me most was learning that thrifted clothes are not always old or unfashionable. There were many stylish and affordable options in great condition. This project changed the way I think about fashion because I now understand that every piece of clothing can have a hidden environmental and human impact. It also made me see thrifting as a way to reduce waste and make more thoughtful fashion choices.
