Windows is a collection of portraits of friends and family, taken from the opposite side of a window. The series, taken during the Covid-19 lockdown, is meant to reflect the reality of the time period. This idea was birthed through the struggle of finding a way to shoot while following the social distancing guidelines encouraged by the state. The Windows portraits portray the many emotions we feel during this time of solitude and unease. Inspired by traditional portraits, I worked to catch the emotion of the subject through facial expression, depth, reflection and contrast. The window itself represents not only the separation due to Covid-19 but also the barrier that can lie between the subject and the camera. Aside from the symbolism of the portraits, I still strove to create visually appealing photographs that are successful both with and without context. The Windows portraits are taken digitally and are digitally edited to be black and white. The choice of black and white unifies and the series and helps them be seen as one, rather than as individual works. The portraits are made to be seen as a series, whether printed in a book or displayed in a gallery alongside one another. Working around the obstacles of Covid-19, Windows translates the emotions of this unsure time into a visual diary of the barrier placed between us.
