Founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (over a century ago!), the National Honor Society is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States and outlying territories, which consists of many chapters in high schools. Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Scholarship- the ability to pursue personal curiosities in the academic world and the qualities or character you retain from it.
Leadership - conducting your own time into something others are unwilling to do. It showcases your hard work and determination to see success.
Service - a voluntary action taken by someone to help others in a particular area.
Character - evaluating your consistent moral qualities and demonstrating good behavioral traits. It is a collection of qualities that distinguish one individual from another
To be accepted into NHS, a non-freshman student must apply via the JDC website, and if their academic behavior and character have been proven in alliance with the NHS's conduct, they will be selected. NHS members also have the ability to run for leadership positions (officer positions) within the society such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and Parliamentarian which are voted on by their peers.
