Ways to Support Advanced Readers at Home:

Support your child's reading journey by focusing on enjoyment, not pressure—let them explore books that spark their interest, whether through pictures, stories, or audiobooks. Make reading fun and shared, and celebrate their progress to build confidence and a lifelong love of reading.

How to Spot a Gifted Reader

Reads Early: Some children learn to read smoothly even before they start school or learn to write.
Uses Big Words: Gifted readers often speak and write using advanced vocabulary for their age.
Understands Deep Ideas: They can understand complex stories and ideas and often make smart connections between books.
Very Curious: They ask lots of questions, enjoy learning new things, and like exploring topics they don’t know much about.
Learns on Their Own: These readers are self-motivated and often read and learn about things they find interesting without being told to.

Nurturing Advanced Readers:

Offer a Wide Range of Books: Give your child books that go beyond their age level and match their interests. Try biographies, historical fiction, classics, and non-fiction on different topics.
Make Library Visits a Habit: Go to the library often and make it fun. Let your child explore new authors and genres. (You can also request free books and record them on the United Through Reading App!)
Have Deep Conversations About Books: Talk with your child about what they’re reading. Ask open-ended questions and listen to their ideas and opinions.
Try Audiobooks: These are great for introducing longer or more challenging books. They can also lead to fun talks about the characters’ voices and how the story is told.
Join a Reading Community: Encourage your child to join a book club or online group where they can meet other kids who love to read.
