I grew up in eastern North Carolina and have spent the past few years living in Durham. I have a long and eclectic work history, starting with my first job cleaning buses at age 12. Since then, I’ve been a camp counselor, deckhand on a commercial passenger vessel, sailboat fleet repairman, sailing instructor, Teaching Assistant/Counselor at the NC Governor’s School, wilderness trip leader, standardized test scorer, line assembler, bicycle mechanic, barista, transportation planning intern, and professional theater technician (to name a few). Somewhere in the midst of all that I graduated with distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a double major in History and Geography and completed the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Duke University. I currently teach in the Social Studies Department at Riverside High School in Durham, NC.
I have a wide range of interests and like to stay busy. I love reading, camping, sailing, gardening, cooking, eating, fixing stuff, riding my bike, and hanging out with my cat. Despite all of my different interests and lines of work, I have always dreamed of teaching Social Studies. I absolutely love this subject and believe that its study has the power to change our world for the better.
