Welcome to Room 202!

We are so excited to start of a new school year with you! Please use this website to help you navigate through the 4th grade. This section of the website will be updated regularly to keep families informed on the progress we are making in 4th Grade Literacy.

Our First Expeditionary Learning Module will be: Becoming a Close Reader and Writing to Learn: Poetry, Biography and Writer’s Identity

Students launch the year by exploring the identity of writers through reading, discussing, and writing about poems and poets. They begin by reading and analyzing the novel Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. Students will learn about the characteristics of poetry by closely reading famous poems featured in the novel. For their end-of-unit performance task, students will select a poet to research further. Then they will write an original poem inspired by their poet’s work, and read informational text in order to write a biographical essay about their poet’s life. Finally, students will present their poem and essay during a Poet’s Performance. Families are welcome! I’ll send home an invitation when we schedule this celebration.

The other major component of their day with me will be Workshop, a time when they will work independently, in small groups, and one-on-one with me to strengthen and improve their reading and writing. On any given day, students could be choosing between several literacy activities: reading books of their choice from home or our classroom library; participating in a guided reading book study with other students; responding to their reading through writing; writing stories or reports on topics of their interest; and doing Word Work (spelling, grammar, learning Greek and Latin roots, etc). This is a very self-directed part of the day.
