Young Authors

•The Young Authors’ Celebration is a showcase of student writing and illustrating. It is not a district-wide competition.

•Each school may submit two books from students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

•Teachers in each school select the books that will be showcased at the celebration. Each school may determine the selection criteria to be used.

Semantics/Spelling Bee

Mathletics

We will be combining the use of materials from both Mathcounts AND Math Olympiad.

We will hold a competition for 5th and 6th graders utilizing problems from Mathcounts and Math Olympiad, combined, and we will hold a separate competition for 7th and 8th graders utilizing the Mathcounts School Test.

Brain Bowl

  • For middle school students only.
  • Teams consist of 2-6 members, only 5 compete in each round
  • One team member is selected to be the spokesperson, the only member who can give the ansnwer.
  • Questions are from all academic areas.
  • Competition is usually January.

Destination Imagination (DI)

  • Purchase a DI team and get a brief explanation of the challenges that you can read through with the team.
  • When the team selects their challenge, DI will assign your team number and all materials/information for your selected challenge. If you switch your challenge, you can do so ONCE for free.

  • BONUS FOR TEACHERS: coaching a team or teaching DI gets PDU credit!

Congressional Art Competition

  • Each spring the Congressional Institude sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.
  • Students submit entries tot heir representatives office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.
  • Winners are recognized in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington D.C.
  • Winning works are displayed for 1 year in the U.S. Capital.

National History Day (NHD) and NHD Junior

•Students choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research.

•Students will look through libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral history interviews, and visit historic sites.

•After they have analyzed and interpreted their sources, and have drawn a conclusion about the significance of their topic, they will then be able to present their work in one of five ways: Paper, Exhibit, Performance, Documentary, or Website.

•Students may present as an individual OR small group
