Career and College Exploration

October is also College and Career Readiness Month so for the week of October 26th-30th we focused on Individual Career and College Plans (ICAPs). Students in DPS complete ICAPS Kinder-12th grade. Grant Ranch students wear college gear on October 26th and learn some really cool and fun things about colleges and career.

Where do I even start?!

College and career paths are closer than you might think! Engage in some of these activities to start thinking about where your passions lie.

Step 1: Think about what you like and enjoy.

Tip: Use tools and assessments/surveys, such as personality tests, strength-finders to help narrow down characteristics about yourself to see how they would fit in a potential career. For example, someone who is extroverted (a social-butterfly) would not do well in a job where they are at their computer all day!

Step 2: Talk to adults about their jobs and education

Tip: As intimidating as it might seem, ask adults about their job. Ask what they like and don't like about their job. This is one of the best ways to get real-world information! Also start researching online all of the jobs that you could have. There are thousands and thousands of jobs out there, and new ones will be available by the time you graduate high school too!

Step 3: Explore!

Tip: Exploring now will help lessen the stress later on in high school. Research shows that people stay in similar categories of jobs even though the titles of the jobs are different; therefore, you might have an idea of what you would like to do and it most likely will hold true! For example, if you know you like helping/serving others, you might want to pursue nursing now, but in high school you decide to go into the military. Similar concept, even though it's a different job title.
