Virtual visit with 4th grade
Escuela Valdez has had the opportunity to partner with Denver's Book Bar, a neighborhood independent bookstore whos goal is to bring literature to the schools in the community through their BookSchool program. One of the best ways in which they accomplish this goal is offering author events that are either free or at a reduced rate.
Through this great program we have had the pleasure of having many of the authors of the books our kids love to read come to our school and speak to our students about their latest books. They also gave our students the opportunity to get those books in our in their hands to feed their love of reading and build their own libraries!

READING IS FUN, Sponsored by the Northwest Denver Optimists Club
Books for Ownership, Reading Is Fundamental’s (RIF) flagship reading program, is grounded in choice, access and engagement. It enables children to select new, age-appropriate books to take home and own and is supported by resources for caregivers, educators, and volunteers to create a continuous focus on reading.
The RIF Books for Ownership matching grant program provides awards to youth-serving organizations in the form of books to distribute to the children they serve to take home and own, building home libraries and creating a culture of literacy.
Last fall Escuela Valdez took part in applying for the Library Services Boost Grant.
We are happy to announce that our school was awarded $5,000!
We were able to purchase many books with inclusive titles that reflect our students’ unique identities and home languages and that will further improve our collection, while allowing students the freedom to self-select books and promote their lifelong love of reading.
When classroom teachers bring students to the Library it is important that they come to an environment that promotes their love of reading.
2019 started of the new year with a gift to the library. We were able to purchase new furniture for the library thanks to generous donations through a DonorsChoose project.
We added new furniture that will allow our students to be motivated and engaged and feel comfortable while reading. All these items are set up in different areas of the library as quiet reading sections. Students can always find a comfortable space to enjoy some quiet reading time.
