speech events
There is a wide variety of speech events allowing students to develop their strengths and delve into their interests.
Interpretive events:
Drama – Individual performer with a dramatic selection. The performer can play more than one character.
Humor - Individual performer with a humorous selection. The performer can play more than one character.
Program of Oral Interpretation (POI) - Individual performer with a selection of literature from at least two of the three following styles: prose, poetry, and drama. The selected texts are woven together to present an argument or perspective on a topic of the student’s choice.
Poetry - Individual performer with a selection of their choice. It may involve one poem or multiple poems. The performer can play more than one character.
Duo - Two performers with a selection of their choice. The performers can play more than one character.
Extemporaneous Speaking
Extemporaneous speaking involves either national or international issues. Speakers draw a question and then are given 30 minutes to prepare a 7-minute speech.
Original Oratory
Original Oratory is a memorized student-written speech that involves no more than 150 quoted words. While the speeches are generally persuasive in nature, they may also be informative. The topic may be virtually anything.
Informative
Informative is a memorized student-written speech that involves no more than 150 quoted words. The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about a topic. The topic may be virtually anything. Visual aids may be used.
