ECE Science Activities
Today we will use our senses to compare objects from nature. Compare is when we notice what is the same and what is different.
What is your favorite animal and how does that animal need trees? Let's explore our book, Tree of Wonder, then head outside to pretend to be an animal!
Fish are another animal group. They live in water, have fins, and breathe through gills.
Pretend to be a bird and build a nest to keep your eggs safe.
What makes a bird a bird? Let's find out together!
Reptiles and amphibians are animals. Let's learn what makes them special and discover how they use trees.
Here's a second lesson to focus on diversity in science. Let's enjoy Ada Twist, Scientist then practice asking science questions.
Today's ECE science lesson focuses on diversity in science. Let's enjoy a book together that highlights different scientists learning different science topics.
Insects are a type of animal. Let's learn what makes them special and discover how they use trees.
Mammals are a type of animal. Let's learn what makes mammals special and discover how they use trees.
Trees are a wonderful place for birds, insects, mammals and more to make homes. Let's read Tree of Wonder together then find animals who make homes in trees!
Can a tree be a home? YES! Let's explore together then head outside to find tree homes.
How are tree seeds the same or different? Let's explore some seeds, then head outside to find some seeds!
What happens when pinecones get wet? Let's find out!
Explore evergreen trees. Use your senses to explore the needles and cones.
Let's use our senses to explore the parts of trees. Can you find leaves, bark, and seeds? Did you know that trees grow from tiny seeds?
Fall is here! The air is crisp, the leaves are falling, and it's a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the day. Let's use our FIVE SENSES to go exploring!

How can we make music from objects we find in nature? Let's use our sense of hearing and get creative! Today we'll be making music in nature.
Today we'll use our ears to explore sounds all around. Are the sounds loud, quiet or repeating? Do the sounds come from plants, animals, people or machines? Let's take a Listening Walk today to explore nature!
Today, let's head outside to use our sense of touch. Use your sense of touch to notice different textures in nature (bumpy, smooth, hard, soft, rough, fuzzy, and more!). Click on the google slick (left) to begin.
Let's explore the different shapes and colors of leaves we find on the ground. Use your sense of sight to notice the beautiful colors.

Welcome to your first ECE remote science lesson! We will focus on shapes in nature and take a Shape Walk.

Take a Tree Walk
As you observe trees, use your senses:
What colors do you see on the bark, leaves, and roots?
What shapes are the leaves and patterns in the bark?
What is the texture of the bark? Leaves? Roots?
Smell the tree: What does it remind you of?
Does the tree look the same or different as it did during the winter?
Build a Nature Viewer
Simply use a toilet paper cardboard roll and markers, crayons, or pens. Once it's decorated, use it like binoculars or a telescope and observe nature from your porch, a window, or on a neighborhood walk. Be sure to look up, dig underground, and look all around.
For a more advanced project: use two cardboard tubes, tape them together, punch two holes on the side and string yarn through to make binoculars.
Cook Together
Yes, cooking is science!
Mixing and measuring ingredients
Make observations of dough before and after it bakes
Predicting what something will look like after it cooks
Use your senses before and after
Recipe ideas: 25+ recipes, PreKinders, Kids Cooking
Build with anything you can find!
Stack acorn tops or build rock cairns
Clip clothespins and popsicle sticks together
Attach mini-marshmallows and spaghetti to form towers
Bridges with recycled materials

This is a lesson from a group called Tinkergarten. The lesson provides background information for adults, a hands-on activity focused on transformation, and extension activities.
Use collected twigs and bits of paper, your family can create this indoor tree. Spend time together thinking of what you are thankful and grateful for, especially during these uncertain times.
Collect natural objects and build rhythms, beats, and songs together. This lesson provides glorious extension activity to build music as a whole family.
In another great lesson from Tinkergarten, let's focus on creating connections. The lesson provides background information for adults with many hands-on and extension ideas.
In another activity led by Tinkergarten, let's focus on transporting. "Kids 'transport' when they do any (and often all) of the following: gather objects, place them inside something, move them around, unload and repeat."
This week's Tinkergarten activity encourages families to create simple spaces for children to create, imagine, build, make and take-apart.
In this lesson from Tinkergarten, families can choose a nature hunt, sensory hunt, or a make-your-own hunt!
