This week, we had some exciting guests. A beekeeper from the Mile Hive Bee Club came and spoke to second graders about this important pollinator! Students got a chance to see a colony of bees up close. Additionally, the School of Mines came and did a science activity with students. They worked in teams to engineer a wind break to prevent wind erosion!

We had a great first week back from break! This week, we learned and wrote about the steps of fossilization. We also had a fantastic Character Ed assembly on responsibility today! We are so proud of our students who were showing responsibility all month.

Next week, students will take the i-Ready diagnostic assessments in both literacy and math. We will use their results to help us see how much they have grown this year. Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on Monday and Tuesday!

All of the second graders met with their science groups today to closely observe many different fossils. Students wrote about what they noticed and wondered. The students were very excited to think about the different plants and animals the fossils came from.

We are looking forward to our experiential learning activities with the Colorado Mountain Club next Friday! Don't forget to send your signed waiver back to school with your child so that they will be able to experience the bouldering bus.

Weekly Update: Friday, October 26

This week, we began our new module in EL, which is all about fossils and the information they give us about Earth's changes over time. We read a narrative nonfiction story about Mary Anning, an early paleontologist who discovered the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton! We are all excited to dive deeper into our study of fossils in the coming weeks.

We had a fantastic time at the literacy parade today! Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers for your help with the celebrations, and to all families for helping your children prepare such great costumes. We couldn't have done it without you!

We enjoyed meeting with all of you at conferences! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us about your child's progress. This Friday, October 26 is the the Literacy Day Parade. Students can bring costumes to wear for the parade at 3pm. They should be carrying a book that corresponds with their costume.

Weekly Update: Friday, September 30

We had a busy week full of learning! In EL, we continued to learn about schools around the world and are preparing for our final performance task. To go along with this unit, we had presentations from parents on their school experiences! All of second grade gathered together on Friday to listen to six parents share what school was like for them. Presentations included school in Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Quaker School! Thanks to all of our volunteers for sharing. The kids (and teachers) learned a ton and had a great time!

Weekly Update: Friday, September 21

This week we started a second grade science day! We are going to try and do this each Friday so the students can work with friends in other classes while learning about fun science topics. This Friday we launched our plant unit with hands on activities like making a greenhouse in a glove and observing seeds!

Birthday treat announcement: Please make sure your treat is "bite sized." Treat ideas are mini cupcakes, fruit snacks, rice krispie treats, or stickers! We also would appreciate having the treat before 11:30 so kids can enjoy it before recess.

Weekly Update: Friday, September 14

We had another busy week in second grade! We were able to log on to two important websites!

1. lion.dpsk12.org This website takes students to eresources where students can check out ebooks. Click on eresources and then on ebooks/audiobooks. Then you will click on overdrive. Students will then have to enter their username and password. Their username is their lunch number (student id) and their password is their 8 digit birthday. Students can then check out up to five books!

2. clever.com/in/dpsk12 This website takes students to their i-Ready account. They can now practice math and reading lessons. We are recommending about 30-45 minutes of at-home practice each week for each subject. We will also be doing lessons at school. Again, students will need to know their username and password.

If you go on to the Parent Portal on IC, you should be able to find their student number.

Reminders: Please make sure to send your child with a small, healthy snack that he or she can eat in five minutes or less. Also, each student should bring a labeled water bottle every day to school - especially during these hotter months!
