About NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling):
NIOS is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was established in 1989 to provide flexible and accessible education to learners across the country.
It is the largest open schooling system in the world, serving millions of learners through a network of study centers in India and abroad.
NIOS offers Secondary (Class X) and Senior Secondary (Class XII) education, along with Open Basic Education (OBE), vocational courses, and life enrichment programs.
The board provides flexibility in subject selection, study pace, and examination attempts, making it ideal for working students, athletes, artists, and learners who cannot attend regular schools.
NIOS certificates are recognized by universities, colleges, and government institutions across India and are generally accepted for higher education and competitive examinations.
Students can study through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) using self-learning materials, online resources, personal contact programs, and tutor-marked assignments.
NIOS promotes inclusive education, giving opportunities to school dropouts, adult learners, differently-abled students, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue their education.
