Dr. Angie Mullennix is the Director of Innovation Strategy at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Prior to this role, she was a full-time Research Associate the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and she now continues that position on a part-time/contractual basis. While at the Friday Institute, Angie worked on the Leandro Project, various STEM projects, and program evaluations. Angie has more than 13 years' experience in education, spanning from elementary through higher education. She has served as a classroom teacher with Hoke County Schools (North Carolina), academic coach in the Humble Independent School District (Houston, Texas) and Moore County Schools (North Carolina), instructor / professor (Fayetteville Technical Community College, Lonestar College-Kingwood, and University of Phoenix Online and Fayetteville Learning Center), and researcher / evaluator (NC State University). Angie also served as a Military Police Paratrooper at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. She is a military spouse and mother to a second grader, Garrett, and fourth grader, Leah. In her spare time (that means 4AM), she trains for Ironman triathlons (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run) and is a 5-time finisher.
Angie's belief is that all students are capable of growing as learners and productive citizens, and that the role of an educator is to foster the possibilities and opportunities that lead to that. She sees value in project-based learning, experiential learning, integrated STEM, and effectively integrating technology through a blended learning model. As a mother of two young children, she also recognizes that in a rapidly changing world, the role of an educator is ever-evolving, that no two children are alike in their learning styles and interests, and that educators must act as pioneers in the journey toward fostering student growth and development.
