The primary role of assessment is to establish where students are in their learning so that teaching can be differentiated and further learning progress can be monitored over time. It provides information that assists teachers to target their teaching at the point of student need. Assessment is most effective when it is an integral part of teaching and learning programs.
Assessment involves:
establishing where students are in their learning
ongoing monitoring
formative and summative tasks
providing feedback about student progress.
NSW Curriculum 2024
NESA has developed information for Assessment and Reporting, including:
assessment principles
formative assessment
summative assessment
evidence and feedback
reporting and using grades
online HSC exams
Reporting provides feedback to students, parents and other teachers about student progress. Teachers make on balance judgements
about student achievement at key points in the learning cycle. Teachers use the common grade scale to
report student levels of achievement at a ‘point in time’ for semester reports. (NESA)
CEDoW semester reports available include:
Kindergarten: An academic report with a three-point scale for each KLA, with a comment section for Religious Education, English and Mathematics.
Years 1-6: An academic report that uses the Common Grade Scale for each KLA, with a comment section for Religious Education, English and Mathematics. The Common Grade Scale describes performance at each of the five grade levels.
General Comments: General comments are included in the Semester 2 report only.
Off-level reporting: An academic report for off-level reporting will be available, where appropriate, for students with a diagnosed or imputed intellectual disability that inhibits them from accessing outcomes at their stage level.
This applies when:
● students are accessing outcomes in SOME or ALL Key Learning Areas (KLA) below the stage level of their cohort
● students are accessing outcomes below the stage level of their cohort in most focus areas/strands within a KLA.
Note - The use of an off-level report must be a collaborative decision made between the school and parents/carers of the student. For further information on Off-Level Reporting, see here.
Partial or Non-graded reporting: These reports are available in exceptional circumstances and in consultation with the school principal and parents. For further information on partial or non-graded reporting, see here.
A Guide for Schools: Assessment and Reporting (updated April 2025) has been created to support schools in developing consistency across their school in assessment and reporting.
For further information, contact Genevieve Cook or Patricia Foster, ILW Learning K-12. For Compass support, contact Michael Norris or Anthony Rooskie.
The Assessment and Reporting: Guide for schools has been developed as a resource that schools may use to build a deeper understanding of the standards referenced approach to reporting. Schools may wish to use this resource in staff meetings to build whole school agreed reporting practices.
