Student Reflection
This artwork was inspired by Isaiah 40:3 “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.” Using Aboriginal dot painting, I explored themes of hope, preparation, and spiritual journey. The dots and pathways represent the desert becoming a straight path towards God - and also reflect our shared walk with Him through life.
As someone just beginning to connect with my Aboriginal heritage, this painting became more than just art; it was a way for me to learn, reflect, and grow. I’m thankful to Uncle Kevin Butler, a local Aboriginal artist, who guided me through this process. His support helped me understand the cultural significance behind the dot painting style and how it can be used to tell stories, both ancient and personal.
This verse reminds me that even in wilderness moments, in times of uncertainty or searching, God calls us to prepare our hearts and trust in His coming. This artwork expresses my own journey of discovering faith, culture, and identity, and how they can all walk together.
At Christmas, we’re reminded that new beginnings are possible; in our hearts, in our stories, and in our connection to something greater.
