Student Reflection
The passage I have chosen is ‘The Birth of Jesus and the Visit of the Magi’ (Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:9-12). I chose this because I wanted to capture the moment where Mary is holding Jesus for the first time and when the Magi came to visit. This relates to me because in the background there are gifts from the Magi, just like there were gifts given for my birth.
The artwork is called ‘The Tears of a Mother’ because my painting depicts Mary crying tears of joy while she holds Jesus, just like how mothers break down in tears when they hold their newborn for the first time.
The gifts in the background also represent the gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh given by the Magi. The dark sky represents the night. I added bits of blue in Mary’s clothes to represent peace, serenity, calmness and stability. I also added a halo around Mary and Jesus to represent their holiness. I used acrylic paints to give an opaque appearance and the gems have been added to represent the star that shone brightly in the sky.
