Student Reflection
The scripture passage I have chosen is ‘The Birth of Jesus and the Visit of the Magi’ (Matthew 1:18-25), as it is a story full of peace, joy, and celebration.
I was inspired by Carlo Acutis and his use of technology to share his faith. Following his example, I designed my artwork digitally using my iPad. I could express my ideas in a modern way while still sharing the timeless message of Jesus’ birth.
The design was then transferred to bricks. I used 5184 small bricks to create this artwork, which is significant because it represents the many steps Mary took on her journey of faith, from the moment she said ‘Yes’ to God, giving birth to the Saviour. The task of placing each brick helped me focus more deeply on the scripture. The repetitive physical act became a rhythm that drew me into meditation and prayer while I worked.
The colours in the artwork carry special meaning. Mary’s vibrant blue clothing represents her faith, purity, and loyalty to God. The yellow glow surrounding Mary’s face highlights her holiness and the grace bestowed upon her. The background of purple and pink captures the joy of Advent, waiting and preparing, and red captures the joy, love, and excitement surrounding the birth of Jesus.
This story reminds me that God chooses ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.
