Student Reflection
My artwork is inspired by the Bible passages Matthew 1:18-25 and 2:9-12, where it says “she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit”. This marks the beginning of Jesus’ journey into the world - growing in Mary’s womb. Mary was blessed with a child of God and this connects to my own life, as my mother was filled with joy when she was gifted with the opportunity to carry me.
I have used various shades of blue to represent faith and the birth of Jesus. The blue of Mary’s cloak reflects her purity. Royal blue symbolises royalty, welcoming the arrival of a King and also represents the sky where the star appeared to guide the Wise Men. Bright blue symbolises heaven, the sky where heralds proclaimed Jesus’ birth. In Roman Catholic tradition, blue symbolises Mary, as the ‘Queen of Heaven’ and the waters of Genesis 1, the beginning of a new creation.
I have used dot painting as it is a key part of our Indigenous culture. It expresses deep connections to the land, natural world and ancestral spirits. My artwork connects me to my ancestors of the land and my faith.
