Student Reflection
This drawing captures the intense emotion Mary would have felt when the Angel Gabriel appeared to her. I imagine her primary feeling was fear, which I found hidden deeply in Luke 1:26-36, which is why I’ve depicted her hiding and peeking through a tear in the paper. I can relate to feeling all sorts of emotions just like Mary would have. However, ‘the Annunciation’ reminds me to pray for the best outcomes in times of change and to trust in God's wisdom and guidance, even if it isn't immediately clear.
While I initially set out to draw an angel and experiment with oils, this changed as I studied the scripture more carefully. It deepened my empathy for Mary and I decided that I wanted to bring that out in my artwork. Choosing to draw in lead pencil was a deliberate decision to avoid the influence colours add for viewers. It also allowed me to create intricate details which invite viewers to step closer, and experience the emotions that lie beneath the surface.
