Student Reflection
In the scripture passage from Luke (2:3-5), ‘Journey to Bethlehem,’ Mary’s determination enlightens us to push through difficult moments, similar to the vast amount of people fleeing from precarious conflicts in order to secure a brighter future for their loved ones. From what we know of Mary, her faith never wavered, and in turn, deepened my belief that God has a plan for us. We are all his children and are equal to one another no matter what position we are in.
Inspired by Amy Sherald, the monochromatic tones highlight the hazardous environment, whilst Mary’s eyes radiate colour to convey her loving nature. Mountainous terrains in the background highlight the hardships of the journey Mary and Joseph overcame. The clouds are inspired by traditional Japanese artworks, displaying the global praise for God.
Life is busy and at times, confusing, but just like Mary, I place the reins of my future into the hands of God. Creating this artwork made me reflect on my past experiences, and the roller coaster of emotions Mary went through whilst heavily pregnant. Life is filled with wonder, highs and lows, and memories that define us. God constructs the beauty of life.
