Student Reflection
My artistic intention was to create an artwork that focused on the message of the First Christmas. The newborn Jesus, found inside a large golden star, is the central figure. He is being looked at tenderly by Mary and Joseph, his parents. The shepherds and Magi point to the shining star as it leads them to the newborn Messiah. The angel kneels in worship, proclaiming the Good News that the Son of God has been born. The rays of light beaming down from above represent the words of God from Heaven.
Each of the bright and detailed figures are a significant part of this special event. I used Prismacolor pencils to create soft blended hues. Jesus is wrapped in purple swaddling, which is the liturgical colour of Advent. The gold filigree pattern surrounding the star enhances its importance.
As all the figures in my artwork all gather together to worship Jesus, similarly my family also gather together at Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas is a very special part of the Church’s liturgical year and part of my life.
