Student Reflection
My artwork is inspired by Luke 1:26-36, which recounts the Annunciation where the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive Jesus.
In my artwork, Mary’s dress features an explosion of colour, representing the intense emotions she experienced upon hearing the angel’s message. These vibrant colours mirror the overwhelming nature of her encounter and the joy and uncertainty that accompanied it. The glowing light represents the presence of the Angel Gabriel and the immensity of the message the Angel carries. I believe that my artwork displays an unbreakable bond between all women and Mary; no matter their race, religion, culture or age.
The scene is set in India, my homeland, which holds a special place in my heart. The textured palm tree in the artwork is a reminder of India’s familiar landscape, linking my personal history with the sacred moment depicted.
I chose acrylic paint for its vibrant colours, which enhance the intensity and clarity of the emotional and spiritual themes of the artwork. I also used acrylics because the bright colour resembles the unique culture of India. The medium helps bring the Annunciation's luminous and transformative aspects to life.
