Student Reflection
The scripture passage I chose is ‘The Birth of Christ,’ from Matthew 1:18-25. This passage tells the story of Mary and Joseph receiving the gift of a child through the Holy Spirit. At first, Joseph planned to quietly end the engagement to protect Mary, but an angel appeared in a dream, telling him, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child within her is from the Holy Spirit.” When Joseph awoke, he followed the angel's guidance and stayed by Mary’s side.
This passage speaks of trust, courage, and preparation. I connected with it because Mary and Joseph had to trust each other and God, even in difficult times. The star that guided the shepherds and wise men symbolises God's light leading everyone to the Savior.
I chose sewing as my technique, using both a machine and hand stitching, because it’s something I enjoy doing with my mum, and it brings me happiness. The natural colours represent Bethlehem, with the blue symbolising Mary’s purity and faith. The bright star in my artwork, shaped like a crucifix, represents both Jesus' birth and his ultimate sacrifice.
