Student Reflection
This scripture passage I selected was ‘The Birth of Jesus and Visit of the Magi’ (Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2: 9-12), because this story appealed to me and I could immediately imagine producing an artwork that showed Mary holding the baby Jesus, with a light around her symbolising her splendour and majesty. The bands of Hebrew in the background say “Journey, Lord, Bethlehem, star and baby Christ.” These words represent the journey of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. You can also see Mary’s hand holding the hand of her precious baby, with all the hope in the world.
To create my image I used pencils, POSCA pens and acrylic paints. For the left side, I used dark colours to allow Mary and baby Jesus to dominate the picture. On the right side, I used blue and purple to represent the night sky that Jesus was born under. Gold and silver were also used here to highlight the importance of the king who had just been born. Blue swirls were used for Mary’s sleeves to show the calming and soothing nature of her, as a new mother.
