Student Reflection
My artwork reflects the passage from Matthew 2:13-15, ‘The Flight to Egypt’, “Search for the child to destroy him.”
I chose ‘The Flight to Egypt’ because I thought that I could capture how power changes someone and that it can turn them into a troubled, greedy individual, trying to hold onto their position of power and stay in control. My artwork reflects the before and after effects of the news of Jesus's birth on King Herod. The colourful side of the drawing is the before effect of Herod, where he feels in control and happy to reign over his kingdom. The before slowly drains into the after effect which is the dark side of the drawing, showing Herod feeling his power drain away and the fear of losing his title.
In this scripture passage, Mary and Joseph flee with baby Jesus in order to escape Herod, fearing Jesus may be killed. They escape to Egypt to seek refuge, in a similar way to many refugees today, running from conflict and evil leaders like Herod. I believe everyone has the right to live free from danger.
The materials I chose to use were crayons, charcoal, black marker, coloured pencils, gold paint and old used jewellery. Using the jewellery and foam, I wanted to make a 3D effect, as if Herod was coming out of the picture still looking for Jesus - still trying to kill.
