Number talks are short, meaningful and carefully selected routines that support students to develop flexibility, and efficiency in mental computation. They allow students to put into practice strategies they have learned, as well as to share and compare their mental processes with their peers. When we use number talks we are supporting our students to build their ability to communicate in mathematics and to reason mathematically.
Remotely, these resources could be used as a teaching routine, where students describe by talking through their mental processes how they see the images. For example, if there is a collection of four objects we could describe it as “I can see 3 and 1 and that makes 4”; “I can see 2 and 2 and that makes 4.”
Esti-mysteries, created by Steve Wyborney are a great way to encourage students to explore quantity through estimating. Each slide and animation is used to reveal a clue where students must consider the numbers they can include and eliminate to solve the mystery of how many.
