The College requires all students be equipped with an Apple MacBook that is capable of running the latest Mac operating system (macOS). At the time of writing, this is macOS 27 Golden Gate.
There are two MacBook models that meet the minimum device requirements and are as follows:
Option 1: MacBook Neo
Display size: 13.0"
Chip: Apple A18 Pro
Memory: 8GB
Storage: 256GB
Option 2: MacBook Air 13-in.
Display size: 13.6"
Chip: Apple M4 OR Apple M5
Memory: 16GB
Storage: 256GB
Families can choose the model that best suits their needs.
Generally speaking, the MacBook Neo is an affordable, entry-level device that will easily handle most apps used by students, while the MacBook Air offers increased performance and is better suited for more intensive work (such as video editing). Families are welcome to opt for different device configurations to suit their needs (e.g, a larger display or more storage), but this is not required by the College.
Both devices have been selected based on connectivity, reliability, performance, and battery life, and ensures students are equipped with a modern device suitable for use as a College learning tool.
Families can purchase their MacBook from any store or reseller of their choosing.
EduCom IT, an Authorised Apple Reseller and Service Provider located nearby in Smeaton Grange, have developed a special Technology Portal for each Catholic Education, Diocese of Wollongong secondary school to assist families with purchasing the correct device. You can access the St Benedict's Portal by visiting https://www.educomit.com.au/dow/ and clicking on the school's crest or by clicking the Laptop Program link.
Laptops must also be carried in a protective case when moving between classes to avoid accidental damage to the device. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they care for and protect their device to ensure that no accidents happen. The College recommends a case like the STM Dux Plus clamshell case. The features of this case provide a high level of protection around the entire device. Please note that soft cloth, material or neoprene cases offer minimal protection for the Macbook.
In the event that you are unable to purchase the device outright, resellers have a number of finance options that will be available to parents and carers. In the case of genuine financial hardship, please contact your student's Year Coordinator.
