What is seppuku?
Seppuku is a ritual samurai completed if they were "disgraced, heavily wounded, or shamefully defeated” (Okamoto). In this process this would result in death inflicted by themselves. With seppuku there were 2 different ways it was done, one of them being voluntarily and the other one involving someone being charged with it. But in most situations the fallen samurai had felt accomplished that he followed the proper ritual and showed the most respect possible for what they had originally done.
The process involving seppuku
In seppuku the idea of self inflicted death involving harm to the inner body was the most important way to show respect to the ritual. In this process they ended up having to “cut their belly off because they believed the spirit rested in the belly” (Okamoto). In most cases when doing this over time there had been too much pain occurring meaning that another samurai (Kaishakunin) had to step in and finish the end of the ritual. In this ritual a few of the final events that the samurai participated in were eating one final meal, wearing a white kimono, and writing a death poem.
