Español para Hispanohablantes I
Descripción del Curso
¡Bienvenidos a Español para Hispanohablantes I!
Spanish Heritage I
Course Description
Welcome to Spanish Heritage I! This advanced academic course is designed specifically for heritage speakers—students who have grown up speaking or hearing Spanish at home and in their communities.
Throughout the semester, we will celebrate your rich cultural background while building the literacy and academic language skills needed for future academic and professional success. Rather than focusing on basic vocabulary, this class will help you expand your formal language register, master written mechanics (such as accentuation and spelling), analyze diverse literary works, and explore the history, traditions, and contemporary issues of the Spanish-speaking world. Expect an engaging, discussion-based environment where your unique voice and cultural experiences are valued.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Master Written Mechanics: Accurately apply written accents (tildes), syllabification rules, and correct spelling variations (e.g. c/s/z/b/v/g/j) in academic writing.
Expand Formal Register: Elevate your oral and written expression beyond informal everyday conversations to present articulate arguments and professional reports.
Analyze Hispanic Culture & History: Critically evaluate cultural themes, indigenous legacies (Maya, Inca, Aztec), colonial architecture, and social movements across Latin America and Spain.
Engage with Literary Texts: Read, interpret, and discuss short stories, legends, poetry, and articles from a variety of Spanish-speaking authors.
Synthesize Tenses in Storytelling: Seamlessly navigate complex verb structures including the preterite, imperfect, present perfect, pluperfect, imperatives, and conditional in both narrative and persuasive contexts.
Produce Multimodal Projects: Research, create, and present collaborative projects (such as photo journals, community proposals, and wellness guides) integrating digital media and oral presentations.
