Guardianship for parents of children with disabilities is a legal process that allows a parent(s) to continue making decisions for their child once the child turns 18 and is considered a legal adult.
When a child turns 18, they are legally presumed to be able to make their own medical, financial, educational, and personal decisions, even if they have a significant disability that impacts their ability to do so. Guardianship is one way to legally maintain or regain the ability to support and protect that individual.
