Cybersecurity Syllabus

Course Description

Cybersecurity at Dover High School is designed to introduce students to basic cybersecurity concepts and inspire interest in cybersecurity careers. The focus of instruction will include the implementation and monitoring of security on network and computer systems. Students will investigate strategies to identify and protect against security threats such as hackers, eavesdropping, and network attacks. The basics of cryptography and logical reasoning will be explored. Hands-on labs in the CYBER.ORG Range provide real-time, hands-on practice in the configuration and mitigation of system vulnerabilities, in a safe online environment. Through course labs students will be introduced to cyber competitions including the National Cyber Cup, PicoCTF, CyberStart America, and CyberPatriot. These events provide students with opportunities to independently expand their cybersecurity learning, possibly win scholarships, and access cybersecurity-related career pathways.
The Cybersecurity course offers Dover High School students the opportunity to broaden their subject knowledge and open a path to exploring careers in Cybersecurity.

Objective: Following the successful completion of this class, students will understand basic robotics. Students will demonstrate comprehension, interpretation, and analytical skills through classwork, projects, quizzes, and tests.

Expectations: Students are expected to be successful in this class. Nearly every classroom period will have some time available for students to practice what they have learned. When such time is given, It is expected that students will be using their time constructively. If work for my class is completed and handed in students may work on other assignments.

Communication is an important science skill and students expect to communicate; with the teacher, and with each other. Communication should be about assignments. The teacher expects that all students will be prepared for class every day. Being prepared means the student has their charged laptop, a pencil, and is ready to be hands-on with their learning.

Our classroom has four foundations to guide behavior; they are the following.

Pencil or Erasable Pens and a folder or notebook
Charged Laptop

Grading Policy: Student grades are based on the total percentage of assignments and the weight of each section. Letter grades are assigned as per the Dover High School Grading and Reporting System. To receive a final passing grade, students must earn a 60% average for the year.

Late Work: Students must stay current with the class. If a student is absent on the day of an assignment/assessment, I expect the student to make up the missing work as soon as possible. Assignment scores will be lowered by 10% for each day they are late and will not be accepted after the major assessment on the subject.

Re-Assessment and Re-Teaching Policy

Students do not always master the objective on the first try; therefore, students will have the opportunity to resubmit or retake assignments. Retakes are allowed on all assessments. If a student does poorly on an assignment they must meet with me for extra help after school. Then, at a later date, the student may come in to retake the assignment. This new assignment grade will replace the old grade if the student has improved. Assessments cannot be retaken after the major assessment on the subject.

Extra Help: Office hours are available according to the schedule below. Students are welcome to come in until 2:50 without an appointment and I will stay as long as I am needed for help. If you are unable to come before 2:50 you must set up an appointment with me ahead of time by email or by talking to me.

In college, and in the “real world” you will have to depend on your own impetus to get where you want to be. Practice that drive now, perfect that drive after high school, and excel in driving yourself in the future.

Cybersecurity Student Contract

Taking this elective is a great privilege that comes with significant responsibility. The laptops and electronic devices you will be using throughout the year are of high quality and value. Therefore, it is essential to understand your responsibilities regarding the safe and appropriate use of all electronics in and outside the cybersecurity classroom.

Misuse of devices, including negligence in protecting sensitive information or violating cybersecurity ethics protocols, will result in immediate disciplinary action in accordance with the rules specified below and with school policy. Permanent removal from the class may be considered if your actions warrant it.

By signing below and getting a parent/guardian's signature you agree to all of the following:

1. You will follow all directions given by your teachers concerning conduct in the class and the use of laptops.

2. You will not use the computers and software in or outside your cybersecurity classroom for any purpose other than classwork for cybersecurity!

3. All aspects of the student Internet agreement remain in effect for this class!

4. You will notify your teacher immediately if any computer or system is “broken” or is not functioning correctly.

5. You will follow the four classroom expectations to the best of your ability.

Depending on the infraction, first-time and minor infractions will result in a teacher’s detention.

Major and/or repeated infractions will be handled by school policy and can result in your removal from the class without credit and/or removal of school technology privileges.

Failure to agree to the above and sign this contract means that you cannot take this class!

Syllabus Robotics I

Course Description

Throughout this school year students will be learning the basics of Robotics. This will include mechanical, electronics, and computer engineering. Robotics is primarily a project-based course where you will begin by learning the Engineering Design Process (EDP). This will set the foundation for all the work that will follow and is based directly on how actual engineers approach complex problem-solving. All students will be expected to become proficient at both planning and building as well as the programming of robots.

Objective: Following the successful completion of this class, students will understand basic robotics. Students will demonstrate comprehension, interpretation, and analytical skills through classwork, projects, quizzes, and tests.

I will only use the tools, machines, and materials that I have been instructed to use by my instructor, passed the appropriate safety test and have been given permission by my instructor
I will never distract a person using tools, machines or hand tools.
Only one person should operate a machine at a time. Unless a specific machine requires assistance as indicated by the instructor, I will make certain that other students are outside the safety zone.
I will not wear loose clothing in the lab. I will roll up my sleeves and wear a shop apron when appropriate.
I will always be very careful when carrying or using tools and materials.
I will not cut toward any part of my body and never toward any other person.
I must behave properly and have self-control in the technology education lab at all times.
I must not run, jump, push or fight at any time in the technology education lab.
I must immediately report all accidents, however slight, to the instructor.
I will work at my assigned place at all times.
Used cleaning/finishing rags must be placed in the metal safety cans that are provided for them.
I will report all damaged or dull tools to the instructor.
I will never, at any time, throw anything in the lab.

Course Description

Robotics II is the second level of the robotics program at Dover High School. Through the use of VEX IQ robotics and STEM Learning Experience, students will be provided with a dynamic environment where they can engage in hands-on, minds-on learning through comprehensive lab units and activities that encourage competition and collaboration in their personalized engineering builds and coding projects. Each STEM Lab Unit culminates in an exciting STEM game competition, which not only enhances student engagement and motivation but also reinforces essential STEM concepts. Each VEX IQ Activity provides students with: exploratory learning, individual self-pacing opportunities, and scaffolded knowledge. This structured approach across all units ensures that students become familiar with necessary skills such as the engineering design process, keeping an engineering notebook, innovation, healthy competition, collaboration, creativity, self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

The Robotics II course offers Dover High School students the opportunity to broaden their interests into the world of STEM, become well-rounded contributors to society, and open a path to becoming science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics leaders!
