English II

This course is required and is meant to guide students in every aspect of the English language. Students will grow their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research skills while interacting with fictional and non-fictional texts from a variety of genres. Our texts include- but are not limited to- dystopian literature, short stories, drama (The Tragedy of MacBeth), poetry, novels (A Lesson Before Dying), and personal narratives. In addition, students will also work with informational texts, such as news articles and speeches. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze a given text, find relevant and specific evidence to support their thoughts, and compare and contrast two or more texts or perspectives. We will also continue to develop literary and linguistic skills in preparation for the NJGPA and SAT examinations that students will take in their junior year of high school.

Advanced Symposium

This course is designed for students to develop their English skills through engaging and relevant themes. We'll explore universal topics like friendship, risk-taking, and global citizenship by reading stories and personal narratives. Students will enhance their oral language skills through discussions and presentations, and will improve their reading comprehension by analyzing diverse texts. Students will also expand their vocabulary with practical, thematic word lists. By the end of the year, our students will have gained confidence in their English abilities and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

SAT Prep

This course will help students gain the essential skills and strategies needed to excel on the English section of the SAT. Students will learn how to analyze sections of provided texts, identify main ideas, find relevant and specific evidence, and understand author's purpose and tone. We will also review grammar rules, punctuation, and proper sentence structure.
