In 2019, the Alabama Literacy Act was signed into law. This law requires any student in kindergarten through third grade who demonstrates a reading deficiency to receive intensive reading instruction and intervention to close the reading gap. Reading deficiencies may by in any of the following areas: letter naming fluency, letter sound fluency, nonsense word fluency, sight words, oral reading accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, or comprehension.
The following resources can be used to learn more about the Alabama Literacy Act and how it may impact your child.
The Alabama Literacy, signed into law in 2019, now guides reading instruction across the state of Alabama.
Assessment
Students are screen 3 times a year using a universal screener to assess early literacy skills and identify possible indicators of dyslexia.
Student Reading Improvement Plan (SRIP)
Students identified as having a deficiency in one or more areas of early literacy are provided an SRIP, which includes intervention strategies to address reading gaps.
Reading Intervention
Students with an SRIP will be provided research-based reading intervention to target individualized reading deficiencies and target possible indicators of dyslexia.
Parent Communication and Resources
Parents are notified in writing of their child's progress monthly. Parents are encouraged to stay in contact with their child's teacher and/or the school Literacy Specialist to see how they can support their child's learning at home.
Each 3rd grade student will participate in the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) English Language Arts Assessment. The ACAP summative is a required test for all third-grade students to initiate a path to promotion. Students not demonstrating sufficient reading skills may be retained at the end of 3rd grade.
3rd Grade students can be promoted to fourth grade by:
Demonstrating sufficient progress on the ACAP English Language Arts Assessment.
Earning an acceptable score on the ACAP Supplemental Assessment given at the end of summer learning.
Demonstrating mastery of essential 3rd grade standards. Evidence of mastery will be collected and stored in a Literacy Act Portfolio.
Qualifying for a Good Cause Exemption.
