Ground cheers reverberated across the Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) grandstand and oval track as the highly anticipated Siglakas 2025 officially commenced last April 21. Under the vibrant theme "Rise and Strive," the week-long sporting and cultural extravaganza has drawn enthusiastic participation from students representing five extension campuses and seven distinct faculties.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle of school pride and artistic expression. Each competing team made a grand entrance, presenting their unique "Saludo" (salute) and symbolic "Icons" as they paraded through the university grounds. The atmosphere crackled with energy, further amplified by captivating performances from the Sinaglikha Drum and Lyre of Banaybanay Extension Campus, DOrSU Marching Band, and the dynamic Kinetics Dance Troupe and DOrSU stars.
University President Dr. Roy G. Ponce set a warm and encouraging tone for the games. In his address, he emphasized the spirit of sportsmanship and personal growth, stating, "this year’s Siglakas is chance for others nga wala naka-gold last time but what I want you to remind is this regenerative attitude which is teamwork, cooperation, fair-play" He also underscored the importance of safety and enjoyment for every participating athlete.
As dusk settled, a dazzling fireworks display illuminated the Davao Oriental sky, signaling the official start of a week filled with intense competition and camaraderie. The Tata ng Tate are now set to clash in various sporting and cultural events, each vying to demonstrate their skills and bring honor to their respective delegations.
This year's Siglakas carries a particular significance as it marks another chapter in DOrSU's history as a fully established state university. Compared to past editions since its university status was formalized, Siglakas 2025 appears to showcase a heightened level of organization, participation, and school spirit. The integration of extension campuses into the main university's activities has fostered a stronger sense of unity and a broader spectrum of talent on display. The level of creative presentations during the opening ceremony, coupled with the evident enthusiasm of the student body, suggests a growing tradition of excellence and a deeper investment in the university's collective identity.
Beyond the thrill of competition and the pursuit of victory, Siglakas 2025 offers a valuable platform for forging lasting friendships and strengthening camaraderie among the students of Davao Oriental State University. May this week serve as an arena where bonds are formed, mutual respect is cultivated, and the spirit of unity rises above all, leaving a legacy of positive connections that extend far beyond the playing fields.
