In observance of World Down Syndrome Day, the Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNED) program at Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) spearheaded an initiative to celebrate and promote inclusion through a symposium and interactive activities last February 26 at the university student center with the theme, "Embrace Abilities: Celebrating the Potential of Every Individual with Down Syndrome."
ASNED President, Ms. Evameah Anquiles, launched the program with a powerful message about inclusion, stressing that true inclusion goes beyond simple awareness, actively building strengths, developing skills, and opening doors for all, particularly learners with Down syndrome, to reach their full potential. "This reminds us that inclusion goes beyond awareness. It involves enhancing strengths, nurturing talents, and creating opportunities where individuals can flourish," she stated.
Moreover, Mrs. Rosemarie E. Maglimong, a SPED teacher, delivered a lecture on "Effective Teaching Strategies for Learners with Down Syndrome,” providing valuable insights to future educators on how to effectively support and understand learners with Down syndrome. In her lecture, she highlighted that "love" is the most essential element in helping learners with Down syndrome, as it cultivates patience, understanding, and a supportive environment where they feel valued and encouraged to grow.
Additionally, Mrs. Maglimong also emphasized that teaching nurtures potential, fosters independence, and builds an inclusive environment where every learner, regardless of ability, is valued and supported “Education is not just about teaching academic subjects; it is about nurturing potential, fostering independence, and creating an inclusive space where every learner, regardless of ability, is valued and supported,” she said.
Furthermore, Mr. Robie Catubigan, BSNED Program Head, concluded the program with an inspiring message, underscoring the crucial role of special needs educators in the community. He emphasized that children with Down syndrome possess the same rights and capabilities as others, and that educators bear the responsibility to help them reach their full potential.
