Newbery Club

The Newbery Award

The Newbery Award is presented on a yearly basis by the Association for Library Service, a division of the American Library Association. The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth century bookseller John Newbery. Since 1922, the award has been presented to the author who has contributed the most to American literature for children.

The Newbery Club is a special source of pride of the St. Louis School Library program and its participants. It is open to students in Grades 4 and 5. After completing a title, the students schedule a Newbery Conference with Mrs. Conlogue. As students progress through the list of 100 titles, they reach various levels of achievement. Ribbons are earned in Five Book increments. A few avid readers have earned 25 and 50 Book Medals. Eight SLS Alumni/ae have attained the status of Newbery Scholar. They read all titles published during their career as students at St. Louis School.

Our Newbery Club is very active. We have several members in Grade 5. I anticipate meeting with many interested Grade 4 readers during this school year.
