How Ancient Forests Can Save Us If We Let Them (Ages 15-16)
This talk will be held in-person in Burlington House as well as live-streamed on Zoom.
Peter Wohlleben, author of Sunday Times bestseller, 'The Hidden Life of Trees', compares tree planting to battery farming and argues that trees will survive environmental disaster but suggests that we won’t be around to see that happen if we don’t make changes now. Wohlleben describes astonishing discoveries about how trees pass knowledge down to succeeding generations and their ability to survive climate change and is unsparing in his criticism of those who wield economic and political power — who plant trees exclusively for the sake of logging and virtue signaling — even as they ruthlessly exploit nature.

Trip to the Houses of Parliament
On the 14th of March, we went to the Houses of Parliament and saw Westminster Hall, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. First we saw Westminster Hall, which had a beautiful contemporary sculpture completed in 2016, called ‘New Dawn.’ What made this sculpture so important was that it was to commemorate the 150 year-long-campaign for women's suffrage, with its title ‘New Dawn’ coming from the suffragettes key saying about a new dawn. What's unique about this piece is that it also changes constantly, with different lights turning on and off depending on if it was low tide or high tide on the River Thames. Then, we saw the original room where parliament was held before it moved to the House of Commons and House of Lords, which was full of beautiful paintings such as Magna Carta and statues of past politicians. After that we entered the central lobby, which is in between the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
First, we went into the House of Commons and saw one of the rooms that was remade after its unfortunate bombing in WWII. The majority of the room had to be remade, except for the doorframe to the House of Commons which was kept the same as a reminder of the bombing from Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who redesigned the new House of Commons. After that we entered one of two rooms to either side of the House of Commons. When we entered the House of Commons itself, we were told about how each proceeding commences and saw how even if you are a Member of Parliament, you have to reserve your seat before each proceeding by writing your name on something called a ‘prayer card’ and put it in a slot behind a seat, if not than you cannot attend the proceeding. Then we saw the House of Lords and saw a statue of Queen Victoria which was commissioned by her husband, Albert when she had to open parliament for the first time and was nervous because she would be the only woman in the room. To her right side was a man holding a sword to represent justice, and to her left was women holding an olive branch to represent mercy, however most interestingly, she disproved of the statue, yet it still stands there today. The room that had the statue of Queen Victoria had blue carpet, unlike the House of Commons which had a green carpet to show that whoever the monarch was, could only go into rooms with blue carpet. This is because King Charles I once entered the House of Commons with armed guards in an attempt to arrest some of its members who opposed his rule. Ever since then, no member of the Royal Family has been allowed into the House of Commons, and once a year when the monarch opens the parliament, a blue carpet must be rolled for them to walk into the House of Lords. For the last part of our tour, we entered the House of Lords itself, which unlike the House of Commons, was untouched by the WWII bombing and had a
After the tour, we were lucky enough to get a short Q&A session with MP, Jeremy Hunt. Questions ranged from being about the budget, to what his job is like and what advice he would give for certain careers. He talked about how he plans the budget, highlights and challenges of his job and how he ended up becoming a politician and then onto being the chancellor. One question was ‘What’s in the budget?’ Unfortunately, we were not allowed to know in advance, but we were told that the theme was helping businesses grow. It was an amazing opportunity and an experience none of us will forget!
All in all, it was a very fun trip where we got a great insight into politics and learnt some interesting facts about the building of the Houses of Parliament and what life as a politician could be like.

Historical Fiction Competition (9-18 years)
One of the key attributes of historical fiction is that it has a convincing setting in a past time and place. You can set your story in ANY* period or place in the past, so the story can fit in with and extend any historical topic you may be studying.
Judges are looking for:
Historical accuracy – even down to the choice of names characters are given and any props additional to the historical setting
A riveting read with a good plot!
A convincing story - i.e. is it plausible that these events and/or this character could have existed at the time?
Use of historical knowledge to feed the plot, context and character
Effective use of historical vocabulary and literary conventions, including where dialogue is included in the story
Creative and interesting perspectives of story-telling. In the past we have received an entry telling the story of a siege from the perspective of the castle!
We recommend a minimum story length of 400 words and this year for the first time we have decided to include a maximum word legth of 3500 words. We regret that entries that go over this word limit may not be considered.

Lecture: Martian Organics – Linking Meteorites and Mission Data (11-18 years)
The main aim of several missions to Mars is to determine whether life evolved on our small red neighbour. These missions will determine if organic compounds are present in the soils and rocks of Mars, and eventually return samples to Earth for detailed study. However, martian rocks are already present on Earth in the form of meteorites, and these rocks are known to contain organic compounds. During this talk they will outline what can we learn from these meteorites, and how can they help our investigations at the martian surface.

Lecture: When mountains and lakes move – causes and consequences
(11-18 years)
In young, dynamic, mountain regions, such as those in the Himalayan Region and the Andes, communities must deal with geological processes that occur almost on a weekly and certainly a seasonal basis. On top of this are the less frequent but often far more catastrophic disasters associated with earthquakes, and devastating floods from outbursts from glacial lakes, landslide dams, and from intense rainstorms. Couple all this with the impact of a changing climate and we have a recipe for environments with very active geological and slope processes that can destroy the very fabric of the local society and influence the economic performance of entire countries.
This free online lecture is led by Professor John Reynolds on 25th May at 6pm.

World Scholars Cup
During the first week of the summer term, a team of three students from Year 7, 8 and 9 competed in the World Scholar's Cup hosted by St Teresa's School.
Year 7 - Edie H, Mercy M, Tildy C
Year 8 - Matilda R, Xander S, Lucy M
Year 9 - Luke M, Violetta P, Kai G
Over the course of the two day competition, pupils took part in a variety of different events including Debating, Scholar's Challenge, Collaborative Writing, Scholar's Bowl, Scholar's Show and Debate Showcase.
The teams found the Scholar's Challenge, a version of a multiple choice quiz particularly hard, however they excelled at the Collaborative writing task. In the afternoon of day 1, pupils took part in the Team Debates with our Year 7 and 8 teams winning two of their three debates against other schools and the Year 9 team winning all their three debates with one of them being against a team of Sixth formers.
On the second day as part of the Scholar's Bowl an additional challenge for members from each school was to balance a toy alpaca (the 'Mascot' for the World Scholar's Cup) on their head. Edie took to this challenge like a duck to water and successfully completed several challenges against the other schools to win an extremely prized large toy alpaca!
The afternoon for the second day concluded with a debate showcase where the best debaters from the first day demonstrated their skills in one final debate. This featured Luke and Matilda being chosen for the debate and Mercy taking on the role as one of the Judges. Following on from this the Scholars show completed the day during which scholars could volunteer to demonstrate a talent. As part of this Tildy and Edie did a wonderful rendition of Lava from Disney.
As part of the awards ceremony all our pupils did brilliantly and won both silver and gold awards for many parts of the competition, far to many to mention individually. However it is important to mention Luke M who took the overall Gold medal for debating, Violetta who took the overall Gold medal for the writing challenge as well as becoming the reserve overall Scholar and our Year 9 Debating team who won the competition. All of our teams also qualified for the global round of the World Scholar's Cup
Overall the pupils did amazingly well, enjoyed both days, and took a lot away from all aspects of the competition. It was also great to see the pupils collaborating and socialising with pupils from other local schools, as well as competing against them.

Lecture: Responsible manufacturing – getting it right from the start (11-18 years)
Many of us buy fairtrade coffee, tea or bananas, but how many of us think about the origin of the raw materials in our manufactured goods?
We may look for a forestry stewardship council tag on wooden furniture, but are less likely to enquire about complex products such as cars or computers. With their thousands of components and long supply chains, responsible sourcing of these goods is difficult to assure but is just as important. Geologists sit right at the beginning of these supply chains and there is much that we can do to be involved in the responsible sourcing agenda.
This free online lecture is led by Frances Wall from the University of Exeter on 14th April at 6pm.

As time passes, community events, memorials and days of remembrance are held to honour those who were lost and provide opportunities for reflection.

Lecture: A voyage through the Earth's Deep Interior (11-18 years)
Sixty years ago, the plate tectonics revolution brought to light the dynamic nature of the earth's interior, with rising hot molten rock forming new crust at mid-ocean ridges and cold, thickened tectonic plates returning to the mantle at so-called subduction zones. We now understand that plate motions are driven by internal currents of matter that serve to evacuate heat accumulated deep in our planet at the time of its formation, or through persistent decay of radioactive elements scattered within it.

Invisible Empire: The Natural History of Viruses (15-18 years)
Microbes are the dark matter of the living world. To view them through the narrow lens of disease and devastation, would be doing an enormous disservice to them. We know that soils, rocks, ocean and wind circulation, the shapes and size of landmasses together form the enormous, planetary-scale, biogeochemical reactor that powers the Earth. But this reactor depends on microbes that are the largest primary energy producers on Earth, and regulate the bulk of Earth’s carbon-oxygen cycle.
Microbes prey on one another, digest, produce, process, ferment, breakdown, recycle, reformulate and synthesise chemicals faster and more efficiently than any human machine ever made. Microbes are also the engines of evolution. All life on Earth evolved from microbes and they live within every creature that is bigger than them. Billions of diverse microbes and viruses live within our gut, inside our lungs, and skin. There is perhaps a virus lurking in every organ of our body.
We cannot outnumber or outmatch viruses. We have to find a way to make peace with them, to understand them, and to treat them as if our very existence depends on them. Because it does.

Caught in the middle: Oceanic sharks, climate warming and fishing (15-18 years)
Oceanic pelagic sharks have declined globally over the past half century due to overfishing. Conservation and management actions are hampered by basic knowledge gaps about movement patterns, migratory routes, drivers of aggregations, climate change impacts, and precisely where they overlap with fishers across population ranges. Without knowing where sharks go and when, and what they do in different habitats, it will remain challenging to understand the impacts of future environmental changes on populations in the face of continued anthropogenic threats.
In this lecture, Prof David Sims will describe his team’s research to understand how pelagic shark movement patterns alter in response to variations in environment, and what this means for understanding habitat selection and their interactions with fishing vessel distributions. He will describe how this knowledge can help conserve shark populations, especially in the light of climate warming and ocean deoxygenation, because interaction of human exploitation and climate change will have important consequences for how sharks are managed in the warmer oceans of the future.
This lecture is delivered by Professor David Sims who is Senior Research Fellow at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) Laboratory in Plymouth, UK.
This free online lecture is on 17th February at 6pm.

What is your vision for Tomorrow’s Earth? Whether you imagine flying cars, robot companions or materials that think for themselves, we can all agree that the future of our planet depends on our ability to tackle the climate crisis.
Across the world, scientists have developed potential solutions to the crisis, from renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture to biodegradable plastics and net-zero computing but the innovation alone isn’t enough. Climate change is a global challenge that will need scientists, policy makers, individuals, industry and more to come together to take action.
So how do we make sure all voices are heard and who will take responsibility to ensure everyone does their part in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss?
This free online lecture is on the 27th January 2022 6pm.

Why do some cats prey on Humans? Online Lecture (15-18 years)
This talk weaves together beastly tales of big cats that make prey of humans in India to ask what may they be telling us about a planet in crisis. These tales of crooked cats have been collected over the past 15 years, largely from the Indian Himalaya. There are many theories on why and how a big cat comes to prey on humans, with the ecological collapse emerging as a central explanatory factor.
This free online lecture is delivered by Nayanika Mathur who is Associate Professor in the Anthropology of South Asia and Director of the South Asia centre at the University of Oxford.

What's in a shadow? Past, Present and Future of Black Hole Imaging. (Senior Students)
The inside of black holes is shielded from observations by an event horizon, a virtual one-way membrane through which matter, light and information can enter but never leave. This loss of information, however, contradicts some basic tenets of quantum physics. Does such an event horizon really exist? What are its effects on the ambient light and surrounding matter? How does a black hole really look? Can one see it? This lecture by Heino Falcke is a free online event on Tuesday 19th October at 1pm. Details are available here (https://ras.ac.uk/events-and-meetings/ras-public-lectures-and-events/whats-shadow-past-present-and-future-black-hole)

Insect Vector Borne Diseases Lecture (Senior Students)
Many of the major diseases of humans are transmitted by insect vectors. Malaria, sleeping sickness, typhus, dengue, Zika and plague are examples where mosquitoes, flies, fleas or ticks transmit. The advantage to the infection is that you can be infected by someone you have never met, often over wide distances. The advantage to humans is that we can act on the insect vector and break the cycle of transmission.
This free public lecture by Professor Chris Whitty (UK Government's Chief Medical Adviser) is on 13th October at 6pm. Detail on how to book can be found here
