Our co-founder, Liz, retired from Doggie Harmony responsibilities to work exclusively on building partnerships with northeast rescues who may be able to help us place more GA dogs. Because the northeast doesn’t have the pet-overpopulation crisis that Georgia does, your dog is likely to receive more applications from out-of-staters and ultimately, find its home there faster.
Your dog will be posted on adoption sites in the Northeast and may get pre-adopted or accepted by a partner as foster. In either case, your dog must:
Get along with all people and up to five other dogs at once with zero signs of aggression
Be heartworm negative or in recovery from heartworm treatment
Here is the commitment we would need from you! You must be willing to:
Sponsor and handle all vetting required by transport and Maine law -- see below.
Visit our Low-Cost Vetting section or ask us about discount programs with other vets.
Answer any inquiries from applicants within 24 hours and phone interview them soon after to determine if your dog is a fit
Drop them at transport meetup on Friday or Saturday, once they're green-lighted to go
Accept the dog back if there is ever an issue of aggression; if dog is returned and non-aggressive, northeast rescue would be willing to rehome your dog there.
Allow northeast rescue to collect the adoption fee, half of which goes to transport. The other half allows them to care for dogs they foster and/or accept it as a return, if need be.
If you are interested in this option and have not yet filled out our Dog Information Form, please do so now. Should you have additional questions, please contact our partner program director, Liz at pawsinthecityatl@gmail.com.
Required Vetting for Transport and Entry into Maine
IMPORTANT: Please ask vet to avoid using these breeds on records unless dog is a known purebred – American Staffordshire Terrier, Pitbull Terrier or “Terrier” / German Shepherd / Rottweiler / Doberman / Rhodesian Ridgeback. The dogs we rescue are mutts; it really puts them at a disadvantage to label them because the media has created negativity around these breeds, plus, insurance companies, property managers, home owner associations, etc. can restrict or penalize people for owning certain breeds. Our goal is to give the dog and their adopters the best possible chance of having a happy forever after.
Transportation Drop-Off
Once dogs are approved for foster or adoption, they will be RSVP’d to travel by climate-controlled van and trailer via Grateful Doggies Transport (Departs on Fridays from these South Locations) or Ruff Riders Transport (departs on Saturdays from Covington or Thomson, GA). Dogs ride in crates and the journey takes two-days. Typically, you will drop your dog off to the transporter on a Friday (for Saturday arrival) at one of these South Locations.
