Manulele Tausala Elementary School (MTES) stands proud as a prestigious institution. Its name derived from the monumental event when the 36th president of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson, visited the territory of American Samoa. The honorable First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, was present during the dedication of the school in October 18th, 1966, thus the name “Ladybird” elementary school was written in the history books in American Samoa. The word “manulele” in its Samoan connotation refers to a “bird”, and “tausala” would be politely referred to an “honorable lady”. The name “Manulele Tausala”, the presently called name in most events is actively used, but the school still acknowledges her humble beginnings and the name’s origin. MTES celebrated her golden jubilee in October 21, 2016, to mark this historical milestone.
