Phoneme Grapheme Mapping

In all of our science of reading instruction training, we have discussed the importance of helping students to become good orthographic mappers and to master the alphabetic principle (which is understanding the relationship between phonemes and graphemes. To master the alphabetic principle, students must identify the number of sounds (phonemes) in a word and then associate the letter or letters (graphemes) that represent each sound. Mapping the graphemes to the phonemes moves students from phoneme awareness to phonics. The acquisition of this knowledge—namely the predictable relationship between spoken sounds and the written letters that represent them—is at the heart of mastering the code to read and spell. These videos demonstrate how to use the phoneme-grapheme mapping technique in whole group and small group instruction. Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping should be part of spelling instruction and word study. There is also a video demonstrating the use of blocks/manipulatives for practice/instruction on phoneme manipulation (addition, deletion, substitution)

K-3 Sound It Out Series

Our dear friend and colleague, Mollie Thomas Carder (K-12 Literacy Specialist at South Central Educational Cooperative) is creating a Sound It Out Series Playlist on YouTube. This playlist is an amazing resource for teachers, students and parents. Part One of the series begins with an overview of the 44 phonemes in the English language and articulation of these phonemes and an introduction to syllables. The series continues with the Six (6) Syllable Types. Whether you are a teacher needing a refresher on the 44 phonemes and articulation; on the six (6) syllable types or wanting your students to have more practice in these areas, check out Mollie Thomas Carder's Sound It Out Playlist via the links provided below.
