The Molecular Science Unit (MSU) is envisioned as a dynamic mover of scientific knowledge, an innovator, and a relevant catalyst for research development. It strictly adheres to the principle of intellectual integrity and honesty in research and upholds the value of Lasallian education in the pursuit of truth and wisdom. Its mission is to develop and foster a vibrant and dynamic academic research culture for the molecular sciences to support advances in genomics, medicine, health, environmental science, and biotechnology. The MSU pursues two research directions: GENOMICS and PROTEOMICS as applied to the preservation and protection of Natural Resources, such as DNA Banking of Indigenous Flora and Fauna of the Philippines, and GENOMICS and PROTEOMICS in the field of Medicine. To avail of the services of the laboratory, please follow the steps:
Step 1 - Attend the MSUL orientation at the beginning of each term. [September 03, 2025]
Step 2 - Fill out the MSUL Intent-to-Use FORM (-CLICK HERE-)
Step 3 - Schedule a training series (i.e., tour, check-in, etc.)
We look forward to working and learning with you.
To prepare yourself for a purposeful and efficient experience in the research enterprise, make sure you are equipped with the knowledge and know-how around the laboratory.
Step 1 - Understand the culture of a community research laboratory
Step 2 - Understand the research process
Step 3 - Know the protocols to facilitate your success in the lab (Planning, planning, and more planning)
"If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail." - Benjamin Franklin (1790) Your training here at MSUL requires that you extensively plan what your visit entails. From past observations, protocols that only take 2 hours take 3-4 hours for a student to accomplish for not having a plan (or reading on the spot - winging it). Worse-case scenarios involve experiments that have to be repeated multiple times because students do not know/understand the concepts behind their experimental designs.
To successfully plan out your sessions:
Have a thorough conversation with your adviser/mentor regarding the objectives and protocols of your experiments. Do your research and learn how to frame questions to clarify, verify, and ascertain that you are "on the same page" with your adviser/mentor.
Request training for the needed skillsets and equipment required for your experiments.
Document, document, document. Having an organized laboratory journal and paying attention to details (observations) saves you time and money in the lab.
Students: Please address any requests about the lab (TO) ASFs (Academic Service Faculty) for MSUL. Always copy and furnish (CC) the (1) Head of the Lab, Dr. Esperanza Cabrera, and your (2) Thesis/Research adviser/mentor, and
Faculty: Can address the Lab Head, Dr. Esperanza Cabrera (esperanza.cabrera@dlsu.edu.ph) for requests/collaborations/etc.
