Aligned with the department’s vision of strengthening scholarship and cultivating a robust research culture in basic education, the session aims to guide participants in producing rigorous, impactful, and publication-ready research. Through engaging discussions and practical strategies, students will gain valuable insights into bridging the gap between academic work and scholarly writing, learning how to structure manuscripts, meet publication standards, and contribute meaningfully to the academic community. Research TALKS, which stands for Research Trends and Approaches towards Leadership, Knowledge, and Service, continues to be a cornerstone of the HUMSS research curriculum, fostering spaces for dialogue, reflection, and the honing of critical research skills among senior high school students.
This week on The Occasional, Dr. Leslie Anne Liwanag shares a dynamic reflection on how studying lived theology with OMSC has connected her vocation in the classrooms of De La Salle University to her research with unheard members of Iglesia ni Cristo, an indigenous Filipino expression of Christianity. Dr. Liwanag reminds us that there are theological truths to hear in the doubts and questions of students and church members alike: "If lived theology means being attentive to the way God moves in real lives, then we must take seriously the sacredness of doubt, the courage of resistance, and the everyday acts of faith that do not always align with doctrine."

Pakikisama (companionship), pakikiramdam (sensitivity), and utang na loob (gratitude)—these are just some of the virtues that appear in Filipino culture. But through the lens of Western psychology, they are seen as a ball and chain for people. While they can be used to promote conformity and seniority, they are not inherently problematic. The way these virtues are often misconstrued is an example of how deeply entrenched Western psychology is in the Philippines.
Sikolohiyang Pilipino (SP) is instrumental in combating this. According to Leslie Anne Liwanag, an Associate Professor in the School of Innovation and Sustainability, SP is “a systematic and scientific examination of Filipinos, by Filipinos, for the Filipino people.” By decolonizing psychology and framing it in the Filipino context, SP can properly understand the experiences of Filipinos, especially those who are marginalized.
